Here's a timeline of Grace Hopper's life:
- 1906 - Born in New York City
- 1928 - Graduates from Vassar College with degrees in mathematics and physics
- 1934 - Earns her PhD in mathematics from Yale University
- 1943 - Joins the United States Navy Reserve during World War II
- 1944 - Assigned to program the Harvard Mark I computer
- 1952 - Develops the first compiler, revoluntionizing how computers are programmed
- 1959 - Leads development of COBOL, one of the first high-level programming languages
- 1969 - Named the first computer science Man of the Year by the Data Processing Mangement Association
- 1983 - Promoted to Rear Admiral by special Presidential appointment
- 1986 - Retires from the Navy at age 79 as the oldest active duty officer
- 1991 - Recieves the National Medal of Technology
- 1992 - Pases away on January 1st at age 85
- 2016 - Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously
